Fujifilm digital cameras have been produced since 1988 when the company first developed the DS-1P, the world's
first digital camera with removable media. The company is in competition with the numerous digital cameras on the
market. They manufacture cameras ranging from simple point and shoot to the more sophisticated Single-Lens Reflex,
or SLR, to the more professional Digital Single-Lens Reflex, or DSLR, cameras.
Fujifilm digital camera selling prices stay consistent with competitor brands and offer high quality images. In
2003 a Finepix 3800 camera sold for $449. It was a 3.2 megapixel SLR that used an XD memory card instead of the
internal memory or the more common SD memory card. The camera came equipped with a hood that was supposed to assist
in glare resistance. The camera did a good job with taking photos, but the use of the XD card required a new type
of card reader. It also was a power hog and drained the 4 AA batters after a little over 300 pictures.
Although the SLR cameras from Fujifilm were similar in design, the megapixels have increased tremendously and
the types of memory cards have reverted back to the SD type, which increases the size of memory. The 10 megapixel
Finepix S1500 not only increased the clarity of the pictures, but also included the enhancement of the zoom feature
from the previous 6X to the 12X zoom. The price of such cameras has dropped dramatically in recent years placing
this camera at $199. The camera also includes an internal memory of 23 megabytes and a macro setting, which allows
extreme close up pictures with clarity.
For those who are interested in a compact camera in the 8 megapixel and up range, there are more than 642 to
choose from and they range from under $100 to upwards of $1200. Of these compact digital cameras Fujifilm
manufactures 60 styles and colors. Of the Fujifilm digital cameras reviewed in the 10-12 megapixel category, these
ranged from under $100 to under $400 and are comparable to other compact cameras in the same category.
Compared to other full body type of digital cameras in the price range of $100 - $200, Fujifilm offers 2 of the
3 cameras reviewed by CNET.com. The Nikon Coolpix L100 is the other camera in the same class and price range and
with similar features. Of the three cameras, the two Fujifilm digital cameras were graded above the Nikon in all of
the reviewed categories. Of the Fujifilm cameras, the S1000fd was considered the overall best in the 10 megapixel,
full body class.
Fujifilm has stayed with the competition in development of digital cameras to include Digital SLR equipment with
interchangeable lenses. The camera body costs around $1800 and is equipped with a Nikon lens mount. Although the
camera is made in the model of the Nikon D200 and could be a virtual twin to the competitor's camera, it offers a
12.3 megapixel resolution versus the Nikon 10.2 megapixel. Both cameras function equally well and have received
awards for their functionality, the S5 received the Electronic Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) as its European
Advanced Camera 2007-2008 and the D200 the DIWA (Digital Imaging Websites Association) Gold Award. The DIWA is a
world-wide organization of collaborating websites.
Since Fujifilm's introduction its version of the digital camera, it has fast become a serious competitor in come
classes and a leader in others. Their innovation into utilizing a removable memory card to store images on has
brought them into a larger product based expansion. So much so that they are now in equal running with the more
well know companies such as Nikon, Canon and Pentax. Fujifilm digital cameras are great cameras for the novice as
well as the professional photographers.
